Today was the first class of Publication project with Rob. Within the first hour of the class we discussed internship possibilities, what we were doing next year, and what idea we have stemmed up for our project.
It was helpful to have the talk that some were dreading. Then we got into web design again- how to upload things onto the web was the main theme.

There are many factors to a website. It consists of a header and a footer and a core which is the centre of the page. Deciding what kind of website that you want to have has proven difficult time and time again for the E-Journalism class.

Broadcast journalism is something that can be quite terrifying for a group of print reporters. We are all so used to being away from the camera, or at least behind it, that it can cause some to become extremely uncomfortable- but what other choice do we have?
Print, unfortunately is on its way out, and newer forms of media such as multimedia pieces are what the industry is looking for. Therefore, the six print reporters in E-Journalism are going to all have to suck it up and do what we got to do in order to get us a job/ career at the end of school..
Today class was again, pretty fun, like yesterday. We incorporated the voice techniques for audio into the lesson that was brought forth today-broadcasting.

Yesterday was sick day and didn't make it to the first class of Broadcast, with the new instructor Andy. And today it was evident that this week is going to be a lot of fun for the class. After being quickly informed of what was missed the previous day, jumping into the lesson and participating was quite easy.
Today the lesson was focusing on a broadcasters voice.
The class watched a few CBC news clips with Andy. The first viewing was for pleasure/content. The second viewing was about technique- chronological order, camera angles and audio. Then the third viewing, which was not really a 'viewing' peruse as Andy took the television monitor and turned it. So all we had left was the audio.

The middle of the week has arrived for the E-Journalism class. Kevin has lectured the class in the morning on how to bring a moving background for a DVD menu. It is not something that has to be used but it can make the DVD more aesthetically pleasing.
Drop zones have clips that can play back inside of a menu.
Web design was finally introduced today, this section will be more interesting as it allows the class to take everything that has been learned and put it back together, Final Cut Pro, Dreamweaver, and Flash.
This shows that all of these applications are all able to be put to use on a constant basis by an e-journalist. Creating tables, and cool roll over buttons allows for a web page to be a user friendly.

Today's hour lesson with Kevin allowed the class to take a closer look at DVD authoring, enough to realize how difficult this may be for a technologically inept student such as myself.

Moving a video from a hard drive of a computer system back on to a tape seems wild in a way, two extremely different pieces of technology that are in different times can work together so easily. Or so it seems, but after struggling to get the project on to the tape for hours was irritating and a damper on some of the students.

Buttons and menus were taken to a greater depth with the involvement of changing state- in order to make 'overlay' buttons. A freeze frame, which will be explained further, can be used for the background of the menu to add a creative touch. When creating the buttons and menus in Photoshop always be sure to use a 720 by 480 image in photo shop as it is a perfect fit to the DVD program-making everything easier in the long run.

For DVD Authoring and Web design, the classes are run more like a regular school week instead of another intense week.
Kevin, the instructor, gave us a quick lesson on the basics of DVD authoring at a later than usual start date, which was a blessing in its own. Then he proceeded to hand us the two assignments that are to be completed by the end of the week.

The DVD authoring assignment is to create a DVD. With the past couple weeks of Final Cut Pro, plenty of assignments were at the classes disposal for completing the software assignment.
Creating chapter stops, menus, and buttons were explained, as well as how to take your project from its compressed quick time file and put it back on tape.

Today was Marina's Birthday!! The class ate lunch at Club 213 in celebration of her 20th.
So Happy BIRTHDAY MARINA!
Happy birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you!
Ha ha. Sorry about that
:)

Back to the point! Flash, on a Wednesday!

Today more assignments were done by the class. It was menu's today. Basic flash tools were used to create a basic menu that can be used for many different websites.
It was the same thing that had been done in the past week. We watched a tutorial and then attempted following it to recreate the flash file. When running into problems, our teacher was readily available to help the six of us through our difficulties that we were all bound to run into, well maybe except for Brian.

The first assignment we were given was to make a sideshow in flash with three different photos. Basic animation was used and skills to allow buttons to go back through the photos.
The zoom technique was also learned through the tutorial, in which the photo goes from a small thumbnail sized image into a larger image. Flash makes this concept easy to use and functional. It is a useful skill to have when creating websites as most photo galleries are now created with flash, and are user friendly.
That was the morning of class.

In the afternoon we created, using layers and sub clips to put together a final product that would display three different pages with separate effects on each.

Today a new section of E-Journalism was introduced to the class. Flash. It is being taught by an animation teacher.
In the morning the class met in the tiny cubicle of a room but our new instructor quickly noticed it was a difficult to teach in such a cramped and warm environment.
The class agreed that moving to the animation wing would be a better suited environment to learn flash.
In the morning the class was shown how to use the different tools of photo-shop by following a tutorial that was posted on Web CT. The assignment included using techniques of photo-shop to put together a variety of shapes, text, gradient, and color tools.

And the week comes to an end, thank god.
The past two weeks have been extremely stressful for a majority of the clas. Leaning a new program can be very fustrating and put quite the damper on peoples spirts when it comes to editing as well as filming.
Learning final cut and how to use cameras has taken over the six e-journalism students lives for the past two weeks and it has finally come to an end. And I know that it leaves me with happy, happy thoughts.
Today was the last day of multimedia with Cathy.
The class looked over the final project and recieved marks for what it is that we had learned throughout the past two weeks.
