A Campbell's blog

In one of the more bizarre stories I’ve been paying attention to over the past little while, was a story about an Ontario father contemplated selling his son’s Christmas present on eBay because he was caught lighting up.
The father, going under the username “k_lid” on eBay posted a message in the information window detailing what his 15-year-old son, Isaac, did to warrant such a punishment.
“k_lid” talks about searching throughout the city to buy his son Guitar Hero III, a game his son has wanted now for quite some time.
When “k-lid,” returned home from his search he came across his son smoking a joint with a couple of friends in their backyard.

Something monumental happened in baseball yesterday and it had nothing to do with the words; steroids, HGH, George Mitchell, Bud Selig or Roger Clemens.
It did however have something to do with a player acknowledging something.
Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees said that opting out of his contract during the World Series was “a mistake that was handled extremely poorly,” in a conference call to announce his mega-contract signing.
During the World Series news was leaked that Rodriguez had decided to opt-out of his current contract, making him a free agent.
Normally announcing you’re opting out of a contract isn’t a horrible thing, but there’s an unwritten rule in baseball that no major announcements are to be made throughout the World Series.

There’s one thing you can count on to get you through those long winter months and that’s your favourite television show.
Whether you like following the exploits of eccentric Dwight K. Schrute of The Office, or you’re a night bird and like to stay up late to watch Letterman, Leno, O’Brien or Kimmel, you’re going to have to wait for new material.
Over the past six weeks, there’s something going on called the writer’s (Writer’s Guild) strike.
Now, a lot of us have heard about the writer’s strike, and we know it might be a while until we get a chance to watch a new episode of whatever we like to watch, but do we know what it’s about?

From Hollywood to Oslo

And the Nobel Peace Prize goes to…I feel like a Hollywood celebrity should be reading that line.
Mark this day in your calendar, Dec. 10, 2007, Al Gore, former vice-president of the United States winner of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
According to The Norwegian Nobel Institute website – "In January 1897 it was learned that he (Nobel) had left the bulk of his considerable estate to a fund, the interest on which was to be awarded annually to the persons whose work had been of the greatest benefit to mankind."

In a month-and-a-half I’ve went from not having a clue what CHARGE syndrome is, to wanting to educate myself even more when it comes to this syndrome.
My video feature with young Victoria morphed into an audio interview with an expert on CHARGE syndrome.
On Dec. 3 I had the chance to speak with Lisa Weir, international director of The CHARGE Syndrome Foundation and had no idea what to expect.
What a I got, was a captivating 21 minute interview where we discussed her daughter Kennedy, who has CHARGE syndrome and the trials and tribulations she has went through since birth.

At the moment I’m knee-deep in a project about Aging Parents: A project dedicated to persons with disabilities and their aging parents.
Needless to say, my sense of awareness about long-term care facilities and retirement homes has gone up in the past little while.
After reading a Star article on Saturday I found out that today the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) filed a formal complaint with our province’s Human Rights Commission to protect residents in long-term care homes.

After experiencing something that affects us emotionally we find ourselves saying, “I shouldn’t take life for granted.”

What do we do?

We turn around and take life for granted.

If there was ever an opportunity for me to stick to those words, it happened on Nov. 10 and I have a five-year-old girl and her mother (Stephanie) to thank.

Victoria Terrio, was born with partial CHARGE syndrome. Each letter in the word CHARGE stands for a word.

Coloboma of the eye, which causes vision loss and underdeveloped retinols, Heart defects, Atresia of the choanae, Retardation of growth, Genital abnormalities, and Ear abnormalities and deafness.

This time last week the Boston Red Sox swept the Colorado Rockies to capture their second World Series championship in three years, yet all I can remember is the constant blatant marketing spots for Taco Bell.
This wasn’t your usual “this pitching change is brought to you by Taco Bell” advertisement.
For those of you who didn’t watch the World Series the contest that Taco Bell was running (“Steal a Base, Steal a Taco”) was the following; if a player stole a base during the World Series, Taco Bell would give away one free taco to everyone in the United States between the hours of 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., two days after the World Series concluded.

A month ago I was invited to join the “Green's own Melanie Mullen for MPP” group on Facebook and I kind of brushed it off.
For those not familiar with Melanie Mullen, she’s the Green party candidate in my hometown of Niagara Falls.
I asked myself, is using Facebook the right way to go when it comes to representing a party and running for MPP?
Some narrow-minded individuals might say she has two things working against her.

Until I had to write about the history of the referendum in Canada, I thought the only province to have one was Québec.

Call it ignorant, but I’ve always thought the word referendum and Québec went hand-in-hand.

While doing a Google search on those two words, referendum and Canada, you get thousands of links with the word Québec in them.

Can you fault anyone for thinking the word referendum belongs in Québec?

Once I dug a little deeper, I came to realize the Oct. 10 referendum isn’t the first in Ontario, but number six, and not only was there a referendum in Québec in 1995, but one in 1980.
